I
Sitting around visiting the other day we ran out of ideas about how to save the world and talked about mundane things like how to keep the refrigerator door closed. And I don't just mean how to keep from going to the frige to get something to eat. I mean just keeping the door closed so the cold air doesn't escape. Seems we weren't the only ones to have our new frige give us trouble. Every time we opened and closed the freezer, the refrigerator door opened a bit and sometimes stayed open a crack. Danny Tebbs said his new one did the same and he found out that it needed balancing. The front legs have a little screw thing that can be raised and lowered. Also he said that if the door was loaded with heavy things that it would close easier with a little nudge. Karen said it also helps to make sure the gasket is clean. I tried these suggestions, and sure enough, I have no more trouble finding it open a crack and electricity wasted. So....in some places there is legislation pending to outlaw high calorie, high sugar snacks where children have easy access, like in schools. I thought that was a good idea, until I remembered how kids will find a way to get to where the junk is. It makes sense to remember the best way to change behavior is "to teach correct principles and let them govern themselves." The trick is to teach in such a way that gets through that "me against you" mentality young people come with. The cigarette ads seem quite effective to get people to smoke and now days the anti smoking ads ought to be effective to get them to stop. I wish there were such ads that teach the stupidly of junk foods. Couldn't vanity be used? I mean let it be seen that the pretty, popular, smart kids eat smart. Trouble is, they don't. Like the disappointment when one finds out sometimes the kid who breaks all the rules can beat us in a race and "not be weary." The Popeye and spinach hype was a good idea. But even that little help isn't around much anymore. To get the big, long-time picture across, must take a something I haven't seen yet. A few ideas:1. DON'T HAVE "DUMB" STUFF IN THE HOUSE.2. Do have "good" stuff available and looking attractive and easy to grab.3. Plan meals so that children seldom have to use their own ingenuity to find something to eat.4. Cut out most pre-packaged foods.5. Find ways to get kids to compare what attractive popular heroes eat compared to sickly, over-weight less successful people eat.6. Reward. Now and then buy the "junk" and have a pig-trough, then compare how you feel. The day kids actually choose healthy over junk, you have won.
